My New Studio

After months of searching for the perfect spot, I’m so excited to say I’ve finally found my dream office and creative studio! Located in the heart of downtown Sonora, I opened and designed my studio this past September. After moving up to Gold Country, I knew I wanted an anchor location to meet with clients, give them inspiration, and showcase most of my rentals I’ve been collecting. Now, I can put together tablescapes and stage my rentals in a way to help excite and give clients a clear vision for their event decor!

Creating tablescapes are one of my favorite services I can provide for clients! Not only is it a great way to showcase personal touches from the couple, but it’s arguably one of the most important aspects of decor! Guests will spend most of the event at their table, and most guests really appreciate the little details that go into the tablescapes. Who would want to sit at a boring table? No one! Another great way to show off personal details is with Save-the-dates and invitations! With being a Minted.com wedding planner ambassador, I now have the perfect setting to show off the many options couples have for their invites!

My Rentals

Along with being an office space to meet with clients, the studio doubles as an amazing showroom for my decor rentals! Over my career, I’ve accumulated so many interesting, eclectic, and timeless pieces. Some of my favorite pieces I’ve actually found at vintage stores, and estate sales! But I have to say, my favorite piece is actually apart of a family heirloom; my treasured, vintage oak frame. It had belonged to my great grandmother, and was apart of a beautiful oak dresser that’s now at my house! It had looked like the frame had once been used as a mirror for dresser, but the glass was no longer there when I acquired it. So, I decided to make it into a sign for clients!

I also love my handmade and upcycled rentals. Just this year, I started carrying locally made arches in my rental collection! Arches have been becoming such a staple item for ceremonies, and the possibilities to embellish them are endless. One of the arches has a great rustic look and appeal, and was made by a Sonora local craftsman. Couples love to add sweeping fabric and unique floral arrangements to it. I also just recently added a trio of black, hexagon arches that stager in size. The best part, my own dad made them! I can’t wait for more couples to rent these out! It pays great homage to the fun, quirky geometric trend right now! Both of these arches are just the beginning, and will both become timeless pieces in my collection.

With my ever growing collection, I’m so excited to showcase more rentals and give clients the inspiration they may need for their wedding! I’m so grateful that I was able to finally find the perfect spot for my studio in charming downtown Sonora.

Hi! I’m Jennifer Valdez. Welcome to An Occasion Blog!

I’m starting this blog because I want to share the amazing experiences, lessons learned, crazy stories, and friendly advice that I have collected throughout my 30+ year career in the event planning and floral design industry. I got my start at 15 years old when my ornamental horticulture teacher helped me get a job at a local floral shop. As an avid learner, I am self-taught and eventually came to start my own flower shop. I later expanded to event planning and design and the rest is history! A history full of memories that I hope to capture in my blog. Every event I have helped plan has been unique, and each one has had its own special touches and ideas. From choosing flowers for the season, color schemes, and tips for working with your vendors – I can’t wait to share these experiences on the blog to help and inspire you for your special day!

A Little Bit About Me

I am the owner and head coordinator/florist for An Occasion Events. I am also a wife to a supportive husband and rancher, and mother to 4 amazing sons. I grew up I Santa Maria, CA and am now enjoying life in the mountains in Sonora, CA. I’m a romantic at heart (and will probably be the first to cry at a wedding ceremony)! I love books and reading, a good cup of coffee, sunshine while working in my garden…and I love planning events! My strengths in strategic planning and developing projects come together with my creative side as an event coordinator; and even after 30 years, I still get excited for every event I get to work on.

My motivation for event planning is seeing the joy on the faces of my clients and their loved ones when the day finally comes together. It’s the “wow” moment when my clients see all their plans come to life. Seeing their dreams come true in the little details of their event is why I do what I do. One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou and says, “Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” My goal is to make sure my clients’ events are a success. I help my clients create their special day and guide them through the process of planning. Planning any event will have ups and downs, but my philosophy is that love knows no barriers and it will find a way. My team and I strive to ensure that everything goes smoothly so that love can flow and give life to the event.

Looking Forward

I have 30 years of my career behind me, but my eyes are set on the future. With another wedding season underway, the launch of this blog, and moving into my new studio in downtown Sonora – I am keeping busy! There are lots of projects on the horizon for An Occasion and I am excited to get more involved in the charming community of Sonora! In addition to the blog series, I hope to expand An Occasion to eventually hold floral and lettering classes, event planning workshops, and more! I can’t wait. Stay tuned. XO - Jen
